Introducing Foundry Coffee Co.

February 1, 2018 By Andrew Sanchez

Foundry Coffee Co. Tuggeranong - Abode Hotels

It’s no secret that Canberrans love their coffee. With an impressive local community of espresso bars, cafes, independent roasters and devotees, this sentiment is here to stay – and has at last reached Tuggeranong in the south.

Opening on 5th February 2018 after Abode Group Food & Beverage Manager, Joseph Wagland identified a gap in the market, Foundry Coffee Co. is Tuggeranong’s answer to barista-made coffee and fresh, light eats on-the-go.

“We’ve noticed a big shift in Tuggeranong in recent years, with an influx of local office workers and residents moving into the apartments nearby. However, until now, there were few amenities to meet their needs,” Joseph said.

Joseph has more than 20 years professional experience in the hospitality industry and says Foundry Coffee Co. is all about raising the bar with great coffee and fast, quality service.

“Canberrans and visitors are not willing to settle for second best when it comes to coffee and service and nor should they. At our espresso bar, customers can expect passionate baristas who, over time, will know them by name, and their favourite brew.”

Foundry Coffee Co.’s loyalty program provides your fifth coffee free. So, for local once-a-day coffee drinkers, your Friday is now looking up!

But it’s not just coffee that’s attracting people to the cafe. Although intimate, this espresso bar features a dark and moody interior, complete with cool, industrial fittings and textures throughout. Pull up a seat at one of the tall benches or, if you prefer to spread out and stay awhile, settle in at the large communal table.

Foundry Coffee Co. is open Monday – Friday, 7am – 3pm and offers free wifi. Stop by for your caffeine fix today.

December 22, 2017 By Andrew Sanchez

Foundry Coffee Co. comes to Abode Tuggeranong

We’re excited to announce that Abode Tuggeranong will have a trendy new neighbour in January, Foundry Coffee Co.

Abode Group’s latest venture, Foundry Coffee Co. is set to shake up the coffee scene in Canberra’s south and what they lack in size, they more than make up for in passion. Every cup of barista made coffee is crafted with care by people who understand coffee, and the importance of fast, quality service.

In addition to your best cup of coffee yet, Foundry Coffee Co. is set to serve up quick, delicious eats, sweets and fresh juices. So, if you’re a local or a guest of Abode Tuggeranong, you can bet we’ll have your mornings off to a good start.

Opening this month, you can find this industrial, specialty coffee house through the Abode Tuggeranong lobby, or just off Anketell Street.

Keep an eye on Foundry Coffee Co.’s social channels for updates and specials as the opening draws closer – Instagram, and Facebook.

The capital’s cafe culture

November 1, 2017 By Andrew Sanchez

Dive headfirst into the capital’s cafe culture, starting with these much-loved spots.

There’s a very good chance that Canberra has the greatest number of top-notch cafes of any Australian capital city (Or any world capital, for that matter). It’s a relatively recent phenomenon, really only taking root over the past decade, yet the ACT is now home to the team that has claimed the title at the Australian Barista Championship for the past three years running, and one among them, Sasa Sestic, won the World Barista Championship in Seattle in 2015.

Capital Cafe Culture 2

Ona, the roastery Sestic founded in 2008, sources green beans direct from communities in Ethiopia, Colombia, Honduras, Rwanda, El Salvador, Panama, Nicaragua and India, roasts and blends the coffee in Canberra and then serves it at its Fyshwick roastery and headquarters, at Ona Manuka, and at The Cupping Room in Civic. Of the three outlets, The Cupping Room is especially notable for its adventurous menu. Accompany your java (or your Nomad hot chocolate or Camelia tea) with fried eggs with pickled onions and Spanish black pudding, say, or chia pudding brightened with pomegranate and berries.

While many of the city’s favourite coffee venues focus mostly on the bean (Harvest in Civic, for instance, or the excellent Lava at Philip and Weston Creek), others work just as hard as the Cupping Room to complement their coffee with interesting eats. Break your fast with a wild take on French toast involving banana curd, honeycomb cream and chocolate custard at Stand by Me in Lyons, with shiitake, field and brown mushrooms sauteed with baby spinach, ricotta cream and pecorino on sourdough toast at Abode Hotel’s excellent No.10 Restaurant + Bar just over the road in Woden. Pair your batch brew or shaken iced latter with corn tortillas, chicken roasted with jalapeno and lime butter at Braddon favourite Barrio Collective, or go Scandi-cool with Danish-style open-faced sandwiches topped with smoked salmon, roast beef or Snowy River smoked trout down the other end of Lonsdale Street at Rye.

In great news for thirsty students, The Coffee Lab has expanded from its Civic base with a new branch on-campus at the ANU; expect some of the best brews in town and the likes of waffles with cauliflower, wild mushrooms and brown butter at both locations. The eye-bendingly hip Mocan and Green Grout might be hard to pronounce (hint: it’s something like “motch-ann”) but its roll crammed with pork shoulder, wombok salad and ginger mayo is very easy to wrap your lips around. Fellow Acton hotspot A. Baker, as the name suggests, has excellent bread, but the kitchen has more than a few other tricks up the sleeve. Take your eggs fried with creamed spinach, labne, gai lan and chilli, baked with tomato kasundi, ’nduja,  fennel oil and garlic bread, or slow-cooked with Gooda Creek mushrooms, sambal and kale.
