Summer is the season that we exercise for, but when the heat hits it can be difficult to find the motivation to keep it up.
It is important to take precautions when exercising during the hotter months. Staying hydrated, applying sunscreen, and wearing cool clothes all become an important part of summer exercise.
Drink an ice slushie before your workout
It may sound odd, however drinking an ice slushie before your workout can actually extend your endurance by an average of 10 minutes.
It is very important to stay hydrated when exercising. Try and drink water at least 15 minutes before your workout. It is recommended that for every 20 minutes spent working out, you should drink at least 250ml of water.
Pick the right sport
A great thing about summer is the variety of sports you can take part in. The warmer weather means sports like swimming, diving, and surfing are all great options to keep fit while staying cool.
Take your exercise indoors
When the temperature gets too high, the best option is to take your workout inside altogether. With air conditioning and readily available water, gyms are a great way to beat the heat. In order to avoid the rush try going at off-peak times, which are usually early in the morning or in the evening (before or after work).

Avoid the sun when it’s at its strongest
If possible, try and avoid the sun at the hottest parts of the day (between 10am and 4pm). As an alternative, try and opt for a workout early in the morning or late in the evening, when it is most likely to be cooler.
Exercise in short, regular bursts outside
If you do choose to exercise outdoors, try and exercise in short bursts instead of one long period. Instead of an hour, try exercising in 15 minute segments throughout the day. As long as you are exercising at your target heart rate, the quality of your exercise routine will remain the same. By exercising in short bursts it will significantly reduce your chance of heatstroke and dehydration.
