New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest nights of the year. It’s a time where we all get to reflect on the year that has been, plan for the future and celebrate with loved ones. Whether you want to party the night away, relax or just enjoy the spectacle of the fireworks, there’s something on the New Year’s Eve menu to suit everyone’s tastes.
A live all-ages concert will be held in Civic Square from 7pm, while you can also catch a last glimpse of the mammoth Christmas lights display that broke a world-record in 2015. Civic Square is also one of the best place to view the fireworks over Lake Burley Griffin at 9pm and again at midnight.
Find out which of your favourite restaurants are offering New Year’s Eve packages and enjoy dinner with friends. If you’re not planning on having a big night and don’t want to travel too far from the hotel, here are some great restaurants located a short drive away:
- Casey Jones (Seven minutes from Abode Gungahlin)
- No.10 restaurant (opening soon at Abode Woden)
- XO Narrabundah (Four minutes from Abode Narrabundah)
- Streets of Asia (One minute from Abode Tuggeranong).
Welcome in 2017 at the free dance party in Garema Place. Acts for 2016 are yet to be announced, but past headliners have included Eskimo Joe and You Am I. Along with the family event in Civic Square, the dance party is an alcohol free event. Bars in the city will be hosting their own New Year’s events too so check their Facebook pages closer to the date. For more information visit www.events.act.gov.au
Find a good view point at Regatta Point, Aspen Island or Commonwealth Park and set up a picnic to watch the fireworks create a colourful spectacle in the sky above the city. If you’re not much of a party animal, there’s nothing wrong with relaxing in the comfort of your Abode apartment.
For something different
Enjoy a unique experience on board the Southern Cross New Year’s Eve Midnight Cocktail Cruise, which will run between 10:30pm and 12:30pm. Appetizers and drinks are included, with ideal positioning to enjoy the midnight fireworks. There is also an earlier cruise at 6.30pm to suit families, with a three-course dinner included in the cost as well as the best seat in the house to watch the 9pm fireworks. Call the Yacht Club on 02 6273 1784 for more details.
New Year challenge
What are your New Year resolutions? Help stick to them by writing down random activities on paper, scrunching them up and putting them in a jar. If it’s fitness, write down a new exercise to do each day or if it’s to travel more, write down somewhere new to visit each week or month.
Our Abode Family rooms are the perfect addition to your holiday. With a king bed (or two singles) and a set of bunk beds, they are perfect for the whole family.
